The Method

Eight weighted dimensions. Verified fields only, and every number names its source. In this edition, a meal planning app is a product that builds a menu from recipes and, in most cases, produces a shopping list. The best meal planning apps of 2026 are ranked by bestmealplanningapp.com's annual evaluation of consumer meal planners, scored across eight weighted dimensions, where privacy disclosure and data-export safeguards together carry 35 of the 100 weight points.

Terms used on this site

The words below carry a fixed meaning on every page of this site. A reader who sees one of them should read it in this sense.

Term Meaning here
Verified Stated on a vendor page, a store listing, or a dated reading recorded in this run.
Not verified Not found on the pages read for this edition. It does not mean the vendor discloses nothing. A not-verified field scores 0.
Free use A plan that works without payment on the vendor's terms. A trial is not free use.
Export A downloadable copy of recipes, meal plans or shopping lists. Cloud backup with a restore to a new device is not an export.
Vendor statement A claim made in pricing or marketing copy. It stays a vendor statement until the policy text says the same thing.

Source tiers and access

Each source has a tier, and each tier has a limit. The tier and access route are shown here so a reader can judge how much weight a field can carry.

Tier Used for Access in this edition
Vendor official page (pricing, features, help center) Prices, trials, plan contents, platforms Read on 2026-10-16. Figures are the vendor's own published text.
Vendor privacy policy D4: policy date and sale or sharing text Research-archive readings dated 2026-10-16, not fetched again. Samsung Food's policy was read through a search summary, because the direct page refused a fetch. Plan to Eat's policy was not read in full.
App store listing Paprika and Samsung Food prices, platform availability Found through search and read as a summary on 2026-10-16. A listing is a single source unless stated.
Third-party evaluation Cozi's privacy rating Common Sense Privacy Program summary, retrieved 2026-10-16. Used only as a rating, never as a policy text.
Vendor statement Claims in pricing copy, such as "does not sell data" Recorded as a vendor statement and scored no higher than 3 on D4.
Government registration Not used in 2026.10 Not applicable.

Dimensions and weights

Six dimensions face the customer directly: they show what a buyer pays and gives up. The two largest, privacy disclosure and data-export safeguards, reflect the fact that a meal planner holds recipes, household routines and shopping history.

ID Dimension Weight Type
D1 Three-year cost 20 client-facing
D2 Price consistency 10 client-facing
D3 Free-tier depth 10 client-facing
D4 Privacy and data-sharing disclosure 20 client-facing
D5 Data export and shutdown safeguards 15 client-facing
D6 Account and card gate 10 client-facing
D7 Shopping list and store integration 10 presence only
D8 Recipe web and video import 5 presence only

Two signals are displayed and never scored: nutrition or macro features (not medical advice; we do not rate health effects) and app-store ratings, which can be inflated and are shown only with their date.

Scoring bands

Each dimension is scored from 0 to 5 using the bands below. A field that is not verified scores 0.

ID 5 3 1 0
D1 cost Three-year cost at most $150, or a free core with no hard cap $201 to $250 Above $300 Full-access price not verified
D2 price consistency Two or more official sources agree on the plan price One official source Official sources disagree No official price found
D3 free tier Core planning and shopping list free, no hard cap Core planning free but capped, or shopping list paid Trial only, or core planning paid No free use found
D4 privacy Current policy text states no sale and no advertising-network sharing Policy not read in full, vendor statements only, analytics or remarketing disclosed, or a policy dated before 2022 Policy or third-party rating discloses sale or sharing with advertising networks Policy read; no statement either way
D5 export and shutdown Documented export of recipes, plans and lists, plus a published shutdown notice Documented backup and restore, no export Export covers part of the data only No documented export found
D6 account and card An official page states that no credit card is needed to start Account needed or free use, with no official statement on card needs Card needed to start Not verified
D7 shopping list List plus a verified retailer or delivery integration Native shopping list only — Not verified or not offered
D8 import Web and video import verified Web import only — Not verified or not offered

The D1 table shows only the 5, 3, 1 and 0 bands. In full: 5 is at most $150 or a free core with no hard cap; 4 is $151 to $200; 3 is $201 to $250; 2 is $251 to $300; 1 is above $300; 0 is not verified.

Formula and worked example

The total is the sum of each weight multiplied by its score and divided by five. Every total on the site can be checked this way. Worked example for Plan to Eat:

total = Σ (weight × score ÷ 5) = 20 + 6 + 2 + 12 + 0 + 10 + 10 + 5 = 65 / 100

Cost inputs for D1

D1 uses the lowest full-access plan, normalised to 36 months. Where a vendor quotes two prices for the same plan length, the higher verified figure is used. Other plans are shown for reference, not scored.

App Basis used 3-year cost Shown for reference
Plan to Eat Annual plan, $49 $147 Monthly plan at $5.95 would be $214.20 over 36 months
AnyList Complete, individual, $9.99 a year $29.97 Household plan at $14.99 a year would be $44.97
Eat This Much Free plan, daily meal plans; no usage cap recorded $0 Premium at $5.00 a month on annual billing: $180
Cozi Free calendar, lists and dinner planning; no usage cap recorded $0 Gold at $39 a year: $117; Max at $79 a year: $237
eMeals Highest 12-month quote, $59.99 a year $179.97 Quotes of "as low as $4.99 a month" and of 3-month plans conflict; see below
Samsung Food Food+ annual, $59.99 a year (free tier caps saved plans) $179.97 Food+ monthly at $6.99 would be $251.64
Paprika iOS $4.99 once plus Mac $29.99 once $34.98 Android and Windows prices not verified in this run
Prepear Full-access price not published on the pages checked Not verified Scored 0 on D1

eMeals' pages disagree. Its help-center article lists a 3-month plan at $35.99 and a 12-month Dinner plan at $59.99. Its homepage FAQ lists a 3-month plan at $37.50 and a 12-month plan "as low as $4.99 a month". We did not complete a checkout, so the price on the checkout page is the one that applies, and D2 scores eMeals 1 of 5 for the conflict.

Privacy and export inputs (D4, D5)

For D4 we read each privacy page for a statement on sale and on sharing with advertising networks, and we record the policy's last revision date where we found one. The table shows each product's inputs and the score they produced.

App Policy date Sale or sharing text recorded D4
Plan to Eat Not read in full Vendor statement on the pricing page only (no sale, no ads) 3
AnyList 2021-01-18 None recorded in this run 3 (dated before 2022)
Eat This Much Not recorded Google Analytics and remarketing through Google and Facebook; states no sale for third-party marketing 3 (analytics disclosed)
Cozi Current policy not confirmed; older text retrieved, date not recorded Common Sense rating: Warning, citing sale or rental to third parties and personalised advertising 1 (third-party rating)
eMeals 2020-04-06 Advertising partners listed in the California section 1
Samsung Food 2023-09-17 Advertising networks listed in the CCPA section (read through a search summary) 1
Paprika Not recorded No explicit statement that personal information is not sold 0
Prepear 2020-09-18 Certain identifiers and web-activity data sold to an advertising network 1

Dated policies are capped at 3 of 5 even when they contain no sale statement. Vendor claims in pricing copy count only as vendor statements, not as policy text.

For D5 we looked for a documented export of recipes, plans and lists. We found none for seven of the eight apps. AnyList documents cloud backup and restore to a new device; that is not an export and scores 3.

Exclusions

Mealime is excluded. Its homepage states that it will shut down on October 21, 2026; we fetched that homepage on 2026-10-16 and the banner was present. We rank only products in active operation on the evaluation date. Mealime appears on this site only as a shutdown case, linked to its own homepage at mealime.com. Two further products are left out because their status reports conflict across sources. We do not score a product on second-hand reports about its closure.

Data coverage and limits

The 2026.10 edition is a desk review of public pages and dated records. We created no accounts and bought no subscriptions. Prices differ by region and channel. A score that rests on unverified fields is published as such, and a later revision will change it only under these same rules. Awards and rankings from third parties are not used as inputs.

Disclosure

bestmealplanningapp.com lists its related publications in the footer and on the about page. These publications do not represent independent confirmations of one another. Commercial relationships: the operator's network may place client products in future rankings. If any product in an edition is a client placement, that edition's list entry and the about page will say so. Corrections are recorded in the revision log on the about page.
